Abstract.

Purpose of the work is to study a possibility to increase coal production in Donbass mines operation of which is restricted by a "gas" factor. Method is considered for determining optimal rate of the face advance according to the "Guide for Designing Ventilation Systems of Coal Mines."

Optimal rate of the face advance was calculated for mining and geological conditions of the Skochinskiy Mine and Pokrovske Mine. Possibility of methane escaping into the air of the face was studied. It is shown that the operating "Guide for Designing Ventilation ..." does not fully satisfy current requirements for calculating acceptable coal output depending on methane content in the working area with taking into account existing high-capacity winning mechanisms.

Keywords:

methods for determining methane  content in the working area, methane flow rate, rate of coal mining.
