Abstract.

Results of the investigation of the group accident caused by methane explosion, which happened on June 12, 2017 at 21:15 in the roadway of the 3rd northern longwall No. 1 of the gradient slope, formation 3, in the “Novodonetskaya” Mine of the “Belozerskoe” LLC, “DTEK Dobropolyeugol”, are considered. The emergency site was insulated. Further work on degassing of the emergency site and putting the face into operation are performed according to the recommendations of the IGTM of the NAS of Ukraine, which have been approved by technical council of the Mine’s management with participation of the State Militarized Mine Rescue Service and other organizations.

The main cause of the accident was unsatisfactory state of supports, hence, making impossible normal ventilation of the roadways in the 3 northern longwall of the gradient slope No. 1, formation 3, horizon 580 m, and leading to local accumulation of methane in the poorly ventilated part of the crosscut and, partially, in under-ventilated air roadway. As a result of total roof fall in the area of conjugation between the 3rd northern longwall and the air roadway, normal ventilation of the roadways in the third northern longwall became impossible, and accumulation of methane in the crosscut or air roadway of the 3 northern longwall was above the maximum permissible level. It is necessary to take into account that at the time of the accident, panel in the 3 northern longwall of the gradient slope No. 1, formation 3, was not provided with the needed amount of air (Qar.calc. = 687 m3/min, Qar.fact. = 270 m3/min), and this was resulted in accumulation of methane in an insufficiently ventilated part of the crosscut or in the area of the air roadway with no ventilation.

As measures to prevent such accidents, it is suggested to make section of mine roadways in the 3rd northern longwall of the gradient slope No. 1, formation 3, in accordance with the project requirements and documents on labour protection and industrial safety. In order to improve safety of works in the 3rd northern longwall of the gradient slope No. 1, formation 3, it is recommended to cut-in a new ventilation roadway. It is proposed to insulate the emergency site till the work starts. For the period of restoration of ventilation in the 3rd northern longwall, air samples should be taken regularly. The district degassing pipeline should be equipped with measuring stations for ensuring control of the degassing process.
