Abstract. This paper presents a method for improving hardness and wear resistance of the surface layers of machine parts used in the mining industry. An effect of cementation on the structure and properties of carbon steel surface pretreated by electrical-discharge method withvanadium electrode was studied. Microstructure of and micro-hardness distribution in the samples treated by three methods - electric-discharge alloying, electric-discharge alloying after cementation and cementation after electric-discharge alloying - were compared as well as results of the sample wear after the abrasion-and-shock tests. The photos of the sample microstructure show the difference between various methods of treatment. It is found that the subsequent cementation of the alloyed layer provides 72% increase of its micro-hardness and twice increase of its wear resistance.
Keywords: electrical-discharge alloying, thermochemical treatment, cementation,microstructure, micro-hardness.
