Abstract. Objective of this study was to analyze prospects and expediency of using thermal tools with the arc electric discharge in processes of thermal reaming of boreholes. To this effect, and on the basis of analyzed literature, various thermal tools used for the rock breaking, their advantages and drawbacks were compared. It is determined, that, if to compare with other methods of rock thermal breaking, rock breaking by the jet of low-temperature plasma differs by fractures propagation into significant depth, greater values of convective heat transfer coefficient and specific heat flow, and compactness of the equipment. The known engineering models of the rock thermal breaking were analyzed. The key trends of improving the existing thermal tools with arc electric discharge and technologies of thermal reaming of boreholes are described. The obtained results can be used for analyzing efficiency of application of thermal tools with the arc electric discharge in other technologies of thermal treatment and destruction of materials.
