Abstract. The article presents the study of caving zone formation considered as a factor affecting the state of geotechnological system "rocks of adjacent panels – roof supports". The following geomechanical regularities of caving zone formation while mining the adjacent panels are established: volumes of disturbed rocks around the mine workings and the needed load-bearing capacity of the roof supports increase in direct proportion to depth, though the needed stability of the system "roof support-rock massif" is inversely proportional to the weight of broken roof rocks; in the process of adjacent longwall mining, when distance from the coal seam roof increases from 7 m to 60 m, the stress maxima reduce twice when the first longwall is mined and reduce by four times when the adjacent longwalls are mined; in case of mining the first longwall as well as in case of mining adjacent longwalls, volumes of rocks broken by stretching strains predominate over the volumes of rocks broken by shear deformations because overlying rocks which are initially under the action of tensile forces, hang over the mine workings, though total volume of broken rocks in case of mining the first longwall is 2-6 times less than in case of mining the adjacent longwalls; mining of adjacent longwall causes a sharp, by 3-4 times, increase of zones with broken rocks, intensive growth of which is further decrease, and speed of the rock failure is higher when the adjacent longwalls are used than when one longwall is used. The obtained scientific results are used for determining rational parameters for mining methods and increasing intensity of mining enterprise work.
Keywords: geomechanics of rock massif, caving zone, adjacent districts in mines, rock massif modeling.
