Abstract.

Evolution of protective linings for the ore grinding mills is considered from the Neolithic to the present day. In XII-VI millennium BC, stone axes and horny pickaxe were used for mineral mining; in IV-I millennium BC, they were supplanted first by copper and bronze, and then iron picks and hammers. Around this time, a new line of mining art – mineral processing - appeared. The article details a transition from primitive methods of ore grinding to technology that uses power of water (XVI-XVII c.). The prototype of the first mills was a stone mortar with pestle; later ore was milled by the pestles (wooden timber with a metal head), and a metal plate was the lining; pestles were driven by water-lifting wheel. In the second half of the XIX century, water mills were driven first by steam and then by electric actuators. At the same time, metal drum mills appeared (fire mills and self-grinding mills), in which metal plates and stone armor served as a protective lining. In the middle of the XX century rubber lining was widely used. Thus, evolution of protective linings has gone long way from stone and metal plates to complex composite materials, which are produced with the help of modern nanotechnology.
