METHANE GENERATION AND COAL METAMORPHISM

Abstract.

Purpose of this article is to research features of the atomic and molecular structure of a coal substance with varying degrees of metamorphism, at the substance disintegration in particular. Such methods as scientific analysis and synthesis, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) were used in the research.

A ratio of aromatic and aliphatic components in the protons 13C of the coals with varying degrees of metamorphism were estimated by the NMR spectroscopy. It is stated that at "slow" mechanical fracture, no significant chemical transformations occur in the coals except for oxidative reactions which are similar to an effect of temperatures existing before the phase is changed. At the "explosive" fracture of the coal samples, some additional lines occur in the EPR spectra of the nanoparticles of the coal extracted from water as opposed to the particles with the size more than 0.05 mm. This fact can be explained by occurrence of new paramagnetic centers whose total concentration exceeds a concentration of initial centers by five orders. 

Focus of the research was on improving a theory of and methods for forecasting gas-dynamic phenomena in the coal mines. The findings essentially clarify the disputable issue and confirm viability of a proposed hypothetical model of anomalous methane manifestations, which is based on the phenomenon of methane generation.
