Abstract. Processes of sudden methane release into the mine tunnels were studied at the main roof primary and subsequent falls during the mining operations. These studies were conducted in order to substantiate criteria for predicting risk of methane outburst when main roof fell with taking into account applicable measures for preventing gas escapes into the mine tunnels. Analysis of the causes, which led to the gas release at the main roof caving and accidents at the Zolotoye Mine of the Pervomayskugol Company and S.M. Kirov Mine and Kholodnaya Balka of the Makeevugol Company has made possible to determine a method for predicting the gas outbursts into the mine tunnels at the roof falls. The article presents schemes of probable geological cuts in areas with possible methane outbursts into the tunnel face and preliminary geological criteria for predicting sudden gassing of the mine tunnels at the main roof falls in zones with geological faults.
Keywords: methane pulse release, main roof caving, sudden gassing, prediction, geological fault.
