Abstract. The article presents a method for determining methane reserves in the coal-rock massif of the Donetsk Coal Basin. This method applies a differential approach for determining methane content in the coals basing on estimation of methane reserves in the coal seams with dividing them into classes: regional and depth. In order to determine methane reserves, this method also takes into account depth of gas zoning, parameters of vertical gas zoning, depth of gas weathering zone and depth of gas-saturated zone. With this method, calculated methane content in the thickness is considered, which is determined as average weight for individual depths and thicknesses of the coal-rock layer, and depth of the upper limit of gas content is shown for the coking and lean coals.

Keywords: methane reserves, coal-rock massif, gas saturation.
