Abstract. Geomechanical processes in oil and gas production were the subject of the research. Objective of the research was to formulate problems occurred during oil and gas production in Ukraine in context of geotechnical and rock mechanics. State of the industry was analyzed. Main problems of geomechanical nature were identified for exploration and exploitation of new deposits, as well as for reanimation of depleted fields. Attention was focused on geomechanical monitoring of oil-and-gas-bearing thicknesses and the earth surface. It is shown, that most valuable aspects to be studied in the new deposits are physical and mechanical properties, as well as stress-strain state of the rocks, and in the depleted fields - are filtration and diffusion processes in reservoir rocks. Information is provided about the Institute of Geotechnical Mechanics projects, which can be useful in solving geomechanical problems in oil and gas industry.

Keywords: oil and gas deposits, geomechanics, rock state and properties, monitoring.
