Abstract. The resources base of iron ore mining industry of Ukraine and Kazakhstan are analyzed. The large ore mining and processing enterprise in these countries and problems of their de-velopment are identified. On the issues to maximize excavation and minimize losses at open-pit mining are considered. A ways of transition to the next stage of the Deposit excavation or completion of a quarries with maximum recovery of reserves are reviewed. A modes of completion of a quarries were classified into groups. The dependence of changes of overburden excavation volumes from generated from the prices of iron ore are installed. This dependence indicates a decline in quarry productivity due to the gradual retirement of the active ore mining front. It is shown, that to improve the economic efficiency of mining enterprises, temporary improvement of their condition and maintain a given of productivity of iron ore quarries, is necessary to ensure involvement in the excavation of the preserved reserves under the existing transport communications at decrease of depth of mining operations in the quarry.
